Whether you’ve got some old books that no longer have space on your bookshelf, or some other products you bought in bulk at a low price from somewhere else, you can find someone to buy it on Amazon and make yourself a couple of extra dollars. Boasting a customer base of millions, Amazon is a great market place for literally anything. It’s best to pick a particular niche to focus on to make your life easier. Amazon also has a couple of great features for sellers to help everything run smoothly so the money can start rolling in.
As long as you’ve got something to sell, you can sign up for an account and find customers on Amazon. Despite the size of the platform and the millions of customers available, it can be hard to beat out the rest of the competition and have your products purchased. Regardless, with a little patience and some work, you can get yourself a piece of the Amazon “forest” and start making money.
Who Is It For?
If you’re interested in running a mini-business selling or re-selling products you buy elsewhere at a low price, you can sign up for a seller account on Amazon.
Who Is It Not For?
Selling on Amazon is like running your business and requires some investment of your time to make sure everything runs smoothly. If you won’t be able to invest some time to grow your selling business, it’ll be difficult to make money from this.
How It Works?
Depending on how much you’re planning to sell, Amazon has 2 plans which are Basic and Pro. Basic is for those who plan to sell 35 items or less per month while Pro is for people planning on selling more than 35 items per month. The differences between the 2 plans are shown below:
Basic
You pay only when you sell something
No monthly subscription fees
Selling fee is £0.75 per item + additional fees
Pro
Best value for volume sales
£25 monthly subscription fees
Selling fees are specified in Seller Central Fee Schedule
Once you’ve decided on a plan, you can register your seller account for free on Seller Central. In order to complete registration, you’ll need your credit or debit card, phone number, personal details, and your bank account details.
With your account ready, you can start uploading your listings by matching against products already available for sale on Amazon, for example matching the bar code or product name. If your item is not already available for sale, you can create a new product listing. You can convert your listings to be Fulfilled by Amazon which means Amazon takes care of storage, picking, packing, and shipping; and your products will become eligible for Prime and fast, free delivery options which increases their visibility.
When a customer places an order on your product, you can take care of the delivery yourself or let Amazon do it if you opt for Fulfilment by Amazon. Your payment will be deposited into the bank account you provided when you created our account and you’ll be notified via email that your payment has been sent.
What We Like?
You can sell anything. Amazon allows you to reach millions of potential customers every day from over 300 million active customer accounts. Thanks to Amazon’s global reach, you can extend into new markets internationally. Low marketing costs. For a small amount, you can use Fulfilment by Amazon which is a logistics solution whereby Amazon picks, packs and delivers your goods to the end customer.
What We Don’t Like?
Despite the millions of potential customers, there’s high competition for those customers.
Depending on the category of your product, Amazon charges range from 8% to 15% as commission.
How Much Can You Make
Your earning potential is dependent on the types of products you sell, how many you can sell, and the Amazon seller charges.
Pros:
Large customer pool
Several great features to make selling easy like Fulfilment by Amazon and Amazon Handmade.
