Starting a side hustle is something which many of us have done. Some of us have started them because we feel we have no choice. We have lost our job, or we are unhappy with our wages. Whatever the reason, afterwards we look back with satisfaction on what we achieved.
Starting a side hustle is not hard. The hardest part is deciding what to do and then actually doing it. You will experience a lot of ups and downs. The most successful people I know have been through many struggles and come out the other side.
Here are some interesting facts about starting a side hustle which you may not already know.
1. It is okay to fail
Failing is a huge part of growing a business. It is part of the learning process. It is okay for you to fail and it is okay to be afraid. The best way to deal with your fears is to talk about them. Talk to others about your fears and what you are worried about. Also, talk to people who have already started a side hustle. They will be able to tell you all the struggles and fears they had and how they were able to overcome them.
2. Only trying new things leads to success
When you start a side hustle it is like opening a door. When you open up that door, you are letting in new opportunities. Opportunities which you may not have seen coming.
When you start a side hustle, you meet new people. You learn new things. You experience different ways of doing things. You gain new skills. The saying that “You do not grow unless you learn” really applies to a side hustle. If you do not learn new things, if you do not try different things, if you do not grow, then your side hustle is going to fail.
3. It is okay to lose money
It is okay to lose money on your side hustle. When I started my side hustle, I simply did it because I wanted to. I did lose money when I first started my side hustle, I lost money every month. The reason I kept on going was that I believed that one day I would become successful. That one day I would make money. That one day my side hustle would become successful. When that did happen, I was so happy. Of course, I no longer was losing money. I was making a profit.
4. The average ‘side hustler’ works an extra 6-15 hours a week
The average side hustler actually puts an extra six to 15 hours of work a week into their secondary gig / job. Whether this is spread out across the week or isolated to weekends, that’s a pretty significant portion of their free time dedicated to the cause. So whatever you do as a side hustle needs to be something you enjoy doing if you are going to be spending all this free time on it.
Sometimes what begins as a hobby can feel more and more like it has the potential to take off as a business in its own right. It could even result in discovering a true calling in life and realizing that the career you’re in just isn’t providing the same level of excitement the side hustle does.
5. It is okay to be afraid.
We are all afraid of something in our lives. It’s normal to be afraid sometimes. Don’t let fear take over your life though.
Fear is an emotion which you feel in response to a situation. Generally, you feel fear when you are unsure about something, when you are uncertain what to expect, when you are uncertain what action to take and when you are uncertain of the consequences of your actions.
If you are in a situation in your life where you feel negative fear, then you should not avoid the situation. Instead, you should concentrate more on the benefits of taking action.
